WHAT IS WETON
The total sum is a combination of the seven days of the week—Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday—and the five Javanese market days—Legi, Pahing, Pon, Wage, Kliwon. These days repeat every 35 days, so it is believed that a person’s birthday will recur every five weeks, starting from their original birth day.
Each of the seven days and the five market days are assigned specific values, known as neptu. Your weton is determined by adding the neptu of the day you were born to the neptu of the corresponding market day.
For instance, if you were born on a Wednesday, which has a neptu of 7, and the market day was Legi, with a neptu of 5, your weton would be 12.

HOW TO CALCULATE WETON FOR THE SUITABLE WEDDING DAY
Each day and pasaran (market days) has its own pattern and neptu (value). For the seven days of the week, Monday has a neptu value of 4, Tuesday 3, Wednesday 7, Thursday 8, Friday 6, Saturday 9, and Sunday 5. For the pasaran days, Legi has a neptu of 5, Pahing 9, Pon 7, Wage 4, and Kliwon 8.
One calculation method still used by the Javanese to determine auspicious wedding days is tibo rampas. This calculation looks at the compatibility of the neptu values of both prospective brides and grooms. The neptu values of both are added together and then divided by three, with the remainder indicating the result’s meaning.
- If the remainder is 1, it is considered unfavorable.
- A remainder of 2 means good for household life and smooth fortune, as both parties are believed to have a balanced distance (one remainder for the husband, and the other for the wife).
- If the remainder is 0, it is said that the marriage will face many obstacles if it continues.
